Quartz, Calcite and Chalcedony – NAM 034

Measurements:  140 x 100 x 45 mm

Description:  Aggregates of calcite with quartz crystals and chalcedony on a basalt matrix. When looking closely through good magnification, one can see a tinge of blue-green colouring in the chalcedony. Strong magnification also reveals minute hematite specks (some red) in most of the quartz crystals.

This is one of only two specimens we have from a rare find, and we (and some of the Brandberg experts) haven't seen any other either.

The specimens has very little damage - only a few small nicks.

Hardness on Mohs Scale:  (calcite) 3
                                                   (quartz and chalcedony)  6.5 to 7

Location:  Namibia. Exact locality unknown, but most probably from the Brandberg area.
