Layer of shiny hematite on iron ore

Measurements:  63 x 58 x 40 mm  

Description:  A thin layer of shiny hematite (with some being botryoidal) partially coats a piece of iron ore, including cavities.

This is part of a most unusual find. Damage is confined to the edges of the specimen.

Weight of Specimen:  136 g

Chemical Composition:  α -Fe2O(hematite)    

Hardness on Mohs Scale:  (hematite)  5 - 6

Location:  Atties Mine, Van Rhynsdorp area, Western Cape, South Africa.
